This is where we keep a statement around our commitments to accessibility in our website. The NDSA is run by a small Executive of individuals with limited funding, however we hope to maintain an accessible digital platform meeting the WCAG 2.2 standards where we can. We hope to be transparent about what we’re working on, and we welcome feedback and suggestions on how to achieve a site that’s inclusive of all visitors. Our site is constantly under improvement, and we appreciate feedback!
Alt text and image descriptions
We welcome feedback from screen readers and other users around our alt text and image descriptions, and if you feel any have been written or used inappropriately, please contact us.
Things we’ve accomplished
- Main menu items have clear animations & contrast changes which indicate which items are being hovered over
- Buttons show differences in hover and focus states
- Boxes are displayed around selected menu items when using keyboard navigation
- Alt text, image descriptions, or appropriate captions are provided.
- External links are made visible, and most file links are labelled with their contents
Changes in progress include
- Consistency in headings, following heading orders and reducing reliance on additional CSS
- Maintaining keyboard navigation
- Reading order for buttons and content on all pages
- Making sure alt text is appropriate to the context and readers’ needs
- All uploads are to be provided in accessible formats with the correct tagging (e.g. headers) & reading orders
- Ensuring accurate language tags are used for kupu Māori
- Making sure links are informative, unique, and aren’t repetitive.
- Over-reliance on images replacing headers may make navigation tricky — we appreciate feedback on whether this has impacted screen reader and keyboard usability!
Improving communication
The NDSA is reliant on external funding, and our ability to provide information in alternative formats has been limited. We’re really keen to provide alternative formats of our resources and information about the NDSA, including:
- Plain language and summarised information
- Easy Read formats
- NZSL translations
If you’re interested in helping us to achieve this, or want to provide feedback, please contact us.
